Crowdsourcing Innovations To Address the Trillion Tree Challenge

Original post by World Economic Forum

Dear friends,

1t.org is the trillion trees initiative, launched at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2020 in Davos. Set up as a 10-year effort, 1t.org aims to support the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030. It is a global, multistakeholder platform which connects governments, businesses, academia, ecopreneurs and community leaders, with the goal of accelerating and scaling successful forest conservation, restoration, and reforestation activities globally.

From July to September 2020, the Trillion Trees Challenge Competition will run via UpLink, a digital platform for crowdsourcing top innovations. The challenge is a global call for solutions, initiatives, fresh perspectives and ideas to help meet the Trillion Trees goal. Submissions will be accepted from 1st to 31st of July.

You can learn more about the Competition here and by registering for a virtual onboarding session.

Yours sincerely,

Nicole Schwab

Doing the right thing right

Nature-based solutions such as reforestation, forest restoration and conservation can provide over one-third of the emissions reductions required by 2030. Such nature-based solutions are however not a silver bullet and need to be part of a broader strategy to protect nature and tackle climate change. To do the right thing right, nature-based solutions need to be anchored in at least four principles (source: nbsguidance.info):

  1. They should not be a substitute for rapid fossil fuel phase out
  2. They should include the protection and restoration of ecosystems (enhancing carbon sinks)
  3. They should be implemented with full engagement and consent from local communities, apply robust social safeguards and build human capacity to adapt to climate change
  4. They should sustain, enhance and support biodiversity
Take a look at our FAQ document for further information on the role of nature-based solutions, and how 1t.org will support the movement towards their at-scale implementation.
Momentum & Opportunity
Reforestation and restoration are experiencing unprecedented momentum.  Governments, companies, community organizations and individuals are taking action. This momentum is hugely encouraging and creates opportunities for change at an unprecedented scale with lasting positive impact on society and the environment.

Creating such lasting impact requires enabling systems and incentives, awareness and mindsets anchored in the understanding that successful restoration and reforestation take time. Indeed, it takes about 5-7 years before a sapling becomes a tree.

One of the goals of 1t.org is to help join up existing and new initiatives and provide them with support in critical areas such as the improved sharing of knowledge, solutions and resources. For these purposes, we are developing a dedicated 1t.org online collaboration and engagement space within UpLink, the World Economic Forum’s digital platform for crowdsourcing and connecting the best innovations aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals. It will be launched in the coming months and we are excited to share more information with you soon.
